Better?

Um, so I know nothing about last game besides that it was a "doozy" (thanks, Bethany) and a gooder (thanks, Dave).

I like the shot clock (though I would like to see more blocked shots, really).

I like that we didn't give up, apparently.

I like hearing guys not named "Dion" or "Jarome" score goals.

So what I want to hear tonight is that we did it again. Can we do that?

I know it depends a good chunk on how Colorado responds to a game they clearly were embarrassed over. I'm not even going to bandy about the word "consistency" right now, I'll believe that when I look back on our season so far in January.

So, here's hoping for another doozy and another gooder... Go Flames.

You Are Cordially Invited To...

... clamber back onto the bandwagon.

Yeah, we can shuffle over. Plenty of room here!

I have to confess (that life being busy) that I wasn't able to follow the Flames through their last two games. That said, they seemed to finally be adding those intangibles we spend a lot of time here moaning about.

Coming back from 3-0 in Nashville was impressive, but even better was in Phoenix, where we got the lead early on, and never let go.

So now we know we're capable of complete games. We're capable of difficult wins. Question is, how long can we maintain this particular tempo? And can we do this night in and out against great teams?

I have to confess that I'm still not hopeful on this front. Certainly a number of things have turned the corner for us so far. Kipper is still Kipper (I maintain that his terrible performances at the beginning of the season were more a result of defensive lapses than anything else), Bertuzzi is looking to be more like his old self that we hated in his Vancouver days, than the useless putz we sniggered at in Florida or Anaheim.

The big question is still the defense. While Phaneuf is now receiving the lion's share of minutes, he's still not quite as steady defensively as I would like. And it's hardly limited to Phaneuf. Overall, I'd just like to see more consistency from the entire corps, and we haven't yet got that.

Tonight we'll be up against the Avs. They've had a very similar trajectory to ours this season - sucking up the beginning, but now rounding into form. It'll be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Go Flames.

Slow starts?

So the Flames are back in action tonight against the also-winless Avs. Good news is, one of these teams will pick up two points. Bad news is, I'm not convinced that's us.

There are so many things we can blame our present performance on. Traditionally poor starts, new systems, new equipment, integrating new players into the team. And on, and on, and on. But the pure fact of the matter is that the perennial slow start creates wear and tear on the team later on in the year...like when we go into playoffs.

Last year (2007-8, for those of you counting on your fingers), we had an identical start in October, losing the opener and getting the loser point in the second game. The rest of October was great, but November was all sorts of abysmal. This is the first season in years where October didn't suck.

The year before (2006-7), we were horrid in October with only three wins, before settling into the Flames and the evil twins they sent on the road to play games.

The year before that (2005-6) we were terrible again in October, going 4-7-2, sucking equally as much at home as on the road.

In fact, you go back far enough, and you'll find that the last year in which we won a season opener was 2001-02.

That's unacceptable.

I'm reminded of when Sutter first took over the team, and faced what he called a culture of "that's ok," where winning didn't have to happen, so long as we put in a good effort, blah blah, blah. I think the same sort of change he put in waaaaay back has to come in now, to attack this problem of starting the season dead asleep. If it's not ok to lose games #5-82, neither should it be ok to lose games #1-5.

MG's got all sorts of reasons to be optimistic or pessimistic about this year's edition... but they gotta start winning (and consequently, showing me what they actually brought to the dance this year) before I come off the fence either way.

Hart of Glass // Pre-Game: Flames @ Nordiques

Hart punnery abounds, it must be that time of year again.

So let's get this out of the way. I think Goalies are/should be exempt from MVP billing. Pound for pound, the goalie is typically the most valuable single player on the ice night in and out. Historically, goalies are ignored for this award. If Kiprusoff can't win the award for turning Calgary around in 03-04 and setting an NHL record in the process, I don't see why any goalie this year qualifies. Brodeur and Luongo are mentioned frequently, but while both are excellent goaltenders I'm not sure either are exceptional enough to be considered MVP candidates at this time.

So let's review some of the potential skaters: Iginla, Lidstrom, Malkin, Ovechkin. All four of these players are having outstanding seasons, to be sure. I would not be overly upset if any of them won. The best way to determine, out of these players, who should win is by process of elimination.

Malkin (4th place): While he's been sensational this year, Conklin is more responsible for where this team is today than Malkin is. I dare say, Conklin was more valuable than Malkin was during their hot streak. He's a top-end producer, but he's not the most valuable player on any given team.

Lidstrom (3rd place): Best defenseman this year, he'll get another Norris. Problem is, with Detroit's depth and success, I'm not sure he's the kind of player that deserves MVP nod -- does he strap the team to his back and carry them to hell and back? No, he's more or less an outstanding defenseman. The depth and strong team play of Detroit really much vetoes this entry. Damien Cox has renewed his idiot certification when discussing this very topic. There are countless things wrong with his op-ed, the most obvious of which is he points to how poorly Detroit played sans Lidstrom. As someone who actually pays attention to teams outside of Toronto, I have an advantage over Cox here: I'm actually aware the Wings are 0-6-1 prior to Lidstrom's injury as well too. Oops.

Ovechkin (2nd place): Outstanding player. Produced better offensive numbers than Iginla. Always is busting his ass. Problem is, he's not bringing the team up to the level they need to be to be competitive. They're looking at the playoffs from the outside, and as valuable as Ovechkin is, he isn't pulling his team to the promised land and that means everything. He'll win MVP at some point, but not yet. (Note: This is assuming they still miss the playoffs, but there is a chance they do make it. If he does, he's going to win the MVP).

Iginla (the winner). Yeah, sure, he's a Flame and this is a Flames blog. But the best way to determine MVP is this: remove the player from the team, will they make the playoffs? Without Iggy, Calgary would likely miss. Without Ovechkin, Washington would definitely miss but are already. Without Malkin, that team can still do tons of damage and can make the playoffs. Without Lidstrom, Detroit is still a lock as a playoff team. Iginla does everything and he does everything so well, he's the idyllic captain who picks the team up, throws them on his back, and rides into the playoffs. He's at the top of his game, and his game is more well-rounded than Ovechkin is and he's using that experience to drive the team to the playoffs. He's the MVP this year.

There's an ice hockey game tonight in Denver! Let me check the schedule -- yep, it's another divisional game! Golly gee, shocking. An astronomically unlikely high-scoring game against Minnie is the precursor to this game, and let's just say if we decide to play that style of game against Colorado we're seven degrees of screwed (I don't know what this means, but it sounds pretty good to my ears). 1 point out of 1st in the NW with a slumping Minnie playing everybody's favourite AHL team, and this is going to be one tense night.

Really not much else to say, aside from we need us a win. GOFLAMES. GO.

Deja vu

Tonight, the Flames do battle with Colorado. We need to get out of #8 in the West to have a chance at surviving the first-round of the playoffs, so we need to string some wins together. My aggravation with Playfair continues to reach new heights, I'm sure Leanne will get sick of me yelling at him during tonight's game.

In my eyes, there is absolutely no reason why this team should not be in 1st in the NW, comfortably. The only thing I can possibly think of is the team is somewhat direction-less. As far as I can tell, there is no cohesive strategy or system which is in pale contrast to Darryl Sutter's approach. I think a lot of players simply get confused by the lack of rigid structure. This works to the benefit of many players, including most of our forwards, but it results in higher goals against also.

I'm thrilled our boys are scoring, but we're letting in too many. Last season I was far more confident in our team than this season, simply because the efforts are inconsistent and even our good efforts seem to result in a lot of goals against. This is not Flames hockey, and until we start playing Flames hockey with this new group of players, the Flames will not become a truly elite team.

I need the Flames to restore my confidence tonight. Tonight will be a litmus test for me: if they let in more than two goals, I'm going to be very, very upset.

I would make my token prediction at this point, but your guess is as good as mine. This team is unpredictable...

(For those of you keeping score, why yes, this is a copy-paste of a post from last year. Sad, but we haven't changed our tune. Though maybe we can complain less loudly about Playfair now.)

Breaking: Forsberg, Leopold, Foote injured; Breaking: Zyuzin a healthy scratch; Breaking: StL to play Cgy

While not exactly shocking, news of the injuries to Forsberg, Foote, and Leopold are great for Calgary. Salei also managed to break his orbital bone fighting Ott for the hit on Leopold. Leopold in particular has been amazingly injury-prone:

22-Jan-08 Missed 2 games (illness).
18-Jan-08 Illness, day-to-day.
29-Dec-07 Missed 4 games (leg injury).
19-Dec-07 Leg injury, day-to-day.
13-Dec-07 Missed 21 games (wrist surgery).
26-Oct-07 Wrist injury, mid-December.
16-Oct-07 Missed 2 games (hip injury).
12-Oct-07 Hip injury, day-to-day.
22-May-07 Re-signed by the Colorado Avalanche to a two-year contract.
09-Apr-07 Missed the last 25 games of the regular season (wrist injury).
17-Feb-07 Wrist injury, sidelined indefinitely.
26-Jan-07 Missed 17 games (groin).

Does a Moreau brother work as Colorado's strength and conditioning coach? In other breaking news, Andrea Susan has been a healthy scratch in Chicago. With a blue-line like Chicago has, that's quite a statement.

Calgary has the opportunity to catapult itself to the top of the division tonight (again). Minnie has 2 games in hand and is only 1 point ahead. While Calgary has points in six of the last seven games, the obvious lack of scoring is a major concern. Huselius needs to turn off the suck as well, he's been an offensive void lately -- is he trying to get moved out of town?

The one brightspot has been Kiprusoff. He's clearly stolen a few games for us, and we're going to need to ride that pony til it runs out of gas, 'cause it's all we got right now. I hate reverting to a Vancouver style of play (minus the award-winning level of goonery and douchebaggery), but if it's working, let's keep it up.

Prediction: 3-1 Calgary win (Hale, Lombardi, Kiprusoff) [Yes, none are likely to ever score an NHL goal...]. Stempniak.

Pre-Game: Colorado @ Calgary, and other stuff

So the Flames are...(whips out calculator)...about a quarter of the way through the season. Interim Report Card: D-. MG and Matt have some detailed posts to hammer down the specifics, but I'm of the opinion that basically there's nothing unfixable on this team, and they just need to learn to play their A game with more frequency, and all at the same time. And also, not suck on the special teams. Who is (are) the special teams coach(es) anyway?

Regehr is, thankfully, not seriously injured from the puck-to-the-head incident against Vancouver. Nilson's out with a concussion. Why is it that Vancouver keeps concussing our boys?

It's time to stop this slide. We need a decisive win. Not a win where the puck deflects off every possible skater in the net for a 8-7 win, but the 5-1 plastering variety. (Please?)

Pure coincedence

It's funny. Over on HLOG, we're talking a lot about superstitions, what with Halloween and all.

Then, today, we spent all class talking about a technology called Avalanche.

Not gonna read anything into it, nuh-uh.

Anyways. We're into the big two weeks of nothing but divisional rivalry. Last year, the Northwest Division was without a doubt the hardest one to play in. This year, it looks as if the balance has shifted to others. I'm thinking specifically of the Central Division, which, though consisting of a great number of inconsistent teams, are a damn bit tougher to play than in years previous (... and that is NOT because we just lost to Detroit yet again...)

Um. I honestly don't like our chances tonight, but we'll pop a couple of extra goals in there, just because Theo Fleury is doing the colour on the PPV broadcast I don't get to watch. 5-2 Calgary.

Flames: 2, McGeough + Colorado: 3

Nothing angers me more than incompetence. No one seems to be more incompetent than Mister Magoo, on a more consistent basis. I hear he's retiring after this season -- why take so long? And how can he possibly still be employed by the league?

On the game itself, it was mostly okay. I liked a lot of what I saw. Most of the time. Maybe when I'm not enraged I could write something more coherent, but for now I think I hurt my teeth by grinding too hard. Note to self: Next time McGeough refs a game, wear a mouthguard.

In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy this clip of more McGeough excellence from last season:

(PS: how awesome is Aucoin? Hale continues to not-disappoint=impress.)

(PPS: I notice I already had a McGeough label. Man, how many refs have their own blog labels?)

Pre-Game: Calgary @ Colorado

9:00pm eastern, 7:00pm mountain, the showdown begins: the Calgary Flames (2-2-1) face the Colorado Avalanche (3-2-0). My prediction is a high-scoring, high octane affair with the Flames coming out on top 6-5. Our defense has yet to really gel to be anything to be supremely confident in, Kiprusoff still looks like he's sitting just outside of "the Zone", and Colorado's defense will never gel to be that great.

But this will definitely be a game I'll watch carefully tonight. If the Flames can pick up another consecutive road win, it'll go a long way to burying the main weakness from last year and hopefully allow everyone to move on with a clear head. I was getting real tired of whining about the road woes and the evil twins. Perhaps the fact that Keenan actually has a spine will impact the rather fragile mental situation of the team last year.

Speaking of Keenan, is it too early to make any judgments? Yes, yes it is. But I do like what I see so far for the most part, and I've no major complaints yet. Maybe in a month there will be more room for criticisms and praises, but for now I'm curious to see how this all plays out.

And, forgive me for saying this, but I love Paul Stastny. He is my sugardaddy in a few of my fantasy leagues. If Colorado is to score, may that gentleman be blessed with points.

(Side note: The following photograph made my day)

Some Quick Free Agent Frenzy Updates

So, Hamrlik to Montreal. I'm not terribly upset, but still...I'd prefer Hamrlik to Aucoin. I'm still not ready to render a serious opinion, I need to sit on these new moves for a bit.

I'm still somewhat smirking about how bad free agency has been to Edmonton and the New York Islanders. Though Colorado got their shit together.

Predictable (Colorado Post-Game)

For fear of stirring the wrath of HG, I kept my doubts about last night's game private. To a colleague of mine, I predicted a Sakic hattrick because that guy was simply too talented and too proud to miss the playoffs. I was close: he got four points.

I will also confess to not watching this game. I've got some reasons: I was doubtful of a Flames victory (sure, I'm a bad fan), and watching the Flames lose pisses me right off. I also had a long day at work. But more importantly, I had just acquired Guitar Hero II for the 360...so yeah, I had nhl.com's boxscore up while I rocked out like an idiot.

That said, I'm not overly concerned. I'm sure we'll make the playoffs, and if we don't, I'm sure Playfair will be fired...either way, I'll be a happy camper.

But I'm mostly upset about my recent lack of enthusiasm. There's lots of good hockey left but I think I've resigned myself to an early playoff exit based on the ineptitude of the Flames head coach, and I don't think that's fair to the team. But life isn't fair, I 'spose...

Finish them!

Doubtless this is the highest of the high points to date this season.

Wins on the road? Check.
Wins on the road with a shootout? Check.
Wins on the road while coming from behind? Check.
Wins on the road against playoff-capable teams? Check.

Definitely there's nothing wrong with our offence. We're not dependent on a handful of players to do their thing anymore - these are arguably the most productive and complete four lines the Flames have put out there in years and years. Our defense? Still shaky at times, but with Hale and Stuart there and Zyuzin behaving, it's starting to look on the ice the way it was supposed to look on paper. And goaltending. No question, Kipper is at the form we need him to be in playoffs. He's the big human Gumby we all know and love.

So there's really only one more mission for the boys this season, before they start getting ready for the playoffs. That would be of course, to lock down a playoff berth.

And it so happens that we've got Colorado all lined up, tied to the post, blindfolded, cigarette in mouth. Question is, can we pull the trigger?

Do it guys, do it!

Colorado Post-Game

An astute reader will notice this is posted during the third period of the game. Yes, we're only down by 1 goal, but it's clear that it's over. Awful effort from everyone on the team. I'm not sure what there else to say.

Nothing would make me happier than to be proven wrong, but I don't see it happening. I still blame Playfair, for what it's worth.

Will we stay or will we go now?

Tonight, the Flames do battle with Colorado. We need to get out of #8 in the West to have a chance at surviving the first-round of the playoffs, so we need to string some wins together. My aggravation with Playfair continues to reach new heights, I'm sure Leanne will get sick of me yelling at him during tonight's game.

Edit: As I post this, I see the article from CBC in our "recent nhl feeds' feature, and see it touches on many of the same points I have. hockeygirl is in a similar depressive funk about the team as I'm in, but she seems to be seeing the bright light coming. Hopefully I can be in the same boat after tonight's game.

Not Morning People

The Flames are not morning people. It takes them time to get up in the morning, or in this case for a 7pm game when you haven't played for three days. The shot counts in particular are telling:
Period 1: Shots For: 8; Shots Against: 19
Period 2: Shots For: 12; Shots Against: 8
Period 3: Shots For: 16; Shots Against: 5

Not too shabby. In fact, it makes a pretty graph:

Now if my calculations are correct, we were trending the right-o-way. Alas, Ned Flanders got some help from Jesus and stopped us in the third period.

The game could have been won had the players woken up earlier. Theory: Are hotel beds too comfortable?

Fatigue (Colorado Pre-game #3)

This mini-playoff series is about to come to an end tonight. It's gut-check time, in a way -- can we win on the road in a series situation? We're almost in the home stretch and I think we'll need that #3 seed, and to do that we need to keep pace with the 'nucks. The pressure is on, and the team needs to come through in a big way tonight.

But will it be a bloodbath? I'm making a bold prediction that Godard gets the call for this game. Oh, it'll be fun to watch.

I'm not sure there's a point to much further discussion in the pre-game. I'm so bored of the Avs. We need more games against Toronto and Edmonton, lord knows we could use the easy points.

Perhaps a mildly offtopic tangent about the psychology of hockey fans. It's amazing to me how a day or so after the Bergeron trade, so many Oilers fans have found excuses for the flat-out stupid trade. While initially most people saw it as the bad trade it was, I'm seeing lots of bizarre reasoning to make it seem like a good trade. For example, "Bergeron was undrafted...so in reality we traded an undrafted player for a prospect, so it's not so bad!". Wow.

Tangential tangent: Huet is out for the season. Tough break for the Habs, I quite liked the guy despite him being, uh, je ne sais pas.

A victory on and off the ice

First, sorry for being MIA the past few days. My "significant other" from Calgary is in town and we've been, well, busy.

Second, we won last night though it was not a convincing game. Budaj sucks and I love him for it.

Third, Edmonton traded Marc-Andre Bergeron for scraps today. Looks like they're going to be sellers this year. Oilers fans will spin this as a positive move, I'm sure, seeing as M-A Bergeron is a pretty awful player anyway.

Edit: So not only did they send away Bergeron, but a 3rd round 2008 pick also? Amazing incompetence. Bergeron, who was at least in the top 30 in goals by a defenseman, was traded for a guy who isn't even willing to play in the AHL to hone his skills. I smell another Mikhnov, though this guy is decidedly less impressive than Mikhnov.

Anxiety (Colorado Pre-game #2)

In retrospect, the boys probably needed to be shaken out of their complacency at home a bit. Not that I don't enjoy winning at home - but there's no way our boys can afford to coast, at home or on the road, at this time of year.

I'm going to keep this short because I don't have more time today - I expect tonight's game to be meaner and a lot more physical than Thursday's was. Kipper will be a bit more game ready, and bar the door on anything that comes his way. I'm not sure whether our D-corps will come out much improved or whether they'll have their confidence shattered. I'm going to go with the former, and predict a 3-0 win for the good guys.

Unclean

Geez, and just when you thought things were looking up. And for a while they were. Iggy/Conroy/Tanguay were clicking amazingly well, and it looked as if Lombardi was taking himself out of that rut he's been in from the last couple of weeks.

Truly an impressive implosion - I have to admit I was on the phone and not really following the game while it happened.

And the thing that makes it worse?

One of my fantasy teams bagged a hattrick tonight, thanks to Hedjuk.

I don't know whether to gloat or cry...
